Fire Hydrants

Fire Hydrants For High Rise Buildings

Fire hydrants are a fundamental component of any effective firefighting infrastructure, providing the Fire & Rescue Service with reliable access to large volumes of water at ground level and throughout a site. In a high rise context, hydrants serve a dual purpose: they support external firefighting operations by giving appliances a nearby and dependable supply point, and they feed the building’s internal riser systems where a pumping arrangement is required. The placement and specification of hydrants is governed by BS 9990 and must be carefully coordinated with the local water authority to confirm that mains pressure and flow rates are sufficient to meet demand. Poor hydrant positioning or an undersized water supply can critically undermine the effectiveness of the entire firefighting strategy for a building, which is why getting the design right at the outset is so important.

DRFSC's Approach to Hydrant Installation

High rise and large scale developments often present logistical challenges when it comes to hydrant installation. Underground chambers must be positioned to allow unobstructed access for fire appliances, and pipework routes must be coordinated with other below ground services to avoid conflicts that cause costly delays on site. DRFSC has extensive experience working within the constraints of dense urban developments where space is at a premium and the sequencing of groundworks is tightly controlled. We liaise directly with water authorities and statutory bodies to obtain the necessary approvals and ensure that all installations meet the requirements of both the local authority and the relevant British Standards. Every hydrant installation we complete is tested, clearly marked and handed over with full documentation.
